“Girls Around Me” App

From my earlier post, I linked to an article that questioned the creepy factor of an app called, “Girls Around Me”.  Follow up shows the app developer claims to be a scapegoat, and FourSquare has shut off the apps access to the FourSquare API AND Apple has pulled the app from their store.

Read more about it here.

    Hi Kathy,
its all about your default setting. if you post your location publicly to facebook / foursquare / twitter it is available to everyone and to apps. If you post it only to your friends / followers apps like girls around me should not be able to access your data. The  http://pleaserobme.com/ project was a wake up call to some “over sharerers” Girls around me is the next. Personally I find it wrong that it was shut down by foresquare as this does not fix any problem.

I completely agree with it being about what you choose to post, hence my previous blog entry, http://www.runningnotes.net/index.php/2012/04/02/its-10pm-do-you-know-where-your-checkin-is/ This post was just a follow up.  I don’t believe the app creator’s assertion that it was so innocent (why call it GIRLS around me, if that’s not what it was for), but don’t believe they did anything technically wrong, as the data was all publicly available data.
