Hug An Admin!
Hug An Admin! It's Sys Admin day!
If you're a developer, they might actually let you do something on the server!
If you're a user, hug them twice, buy them a drink, say you're sorry and back away slowly.
I'm Kathy Brown and I've been an application developer in Lotus Notes/Domino since 2005.
Prior to working in IT, I've had numerous careers including an Investment Analyst and even an Actress (long ago and far away).
And I (try to) love running!

It's hard to believe, and yet, not hard to believe. Tomorrow will be two full months of running every day. I feel great. The last few days have been a little tough due to the temperatures in the mid-80s and high humidity, but so far so good! It's better than snow, right?
I realize logically that this is a huge accomplishment, and am proud of myself. But, it really doesn't feel like it's been hard to do. I just run, every day, but still it's just running. Between two and six miles. I'm also in week three of my training for my THIRD half marathon. I am very interested to see how running every day will impact my training and my time.
I've also been doing the one hundred pushups program. I'm in the middle of Week 5 (although it's been 7 or 8 weeks). I'm feeling great with that as well. I started out only able to do 6 measly pushups. Last night's final set (of 8 sets) consisted of 40 pushups!!
I'm really looking forward to this weekend as my worlds collide! I will be going to IAMLUG, a conference for Lotus User's, and a few people have said they will be running with me! Woohoo! Running AND Notes!
(God, I'm such a geek).
ETA: And I've run ALL of those miles on my chart in my Brooks Adrenaline GTS 8s! I love those shoes. I have three pairs of them!
I really think IQJam is going to be a great product, that is an easy sell to management. Go HERE to check out the announcement. I think a frequent concern of most corporations is how to pool information and knowledge. What looks great about IQJam is not just the ability to pool that information (and put it somewhere where everyone can find it), but also to vote on it!
How many times have you visited a forum, asked a question and received an answer - only to find out later the answer was dead wrong! With IQJam it looks as though users will be able to pose questions and other users can answer and have those answers rated. And even better, it looks like there will be a leaderboard for those that provide answers, motivating people to provide quality answers to other users!
Some in corporate management may not see the use in IdeaJam (why do I need to know what employees want), I think the function of IQJam is plain to see and an easy selll to management. You can even use management-friendly buzzwords: "Leverage our pre-existing knowledge base".
I for one am looking forward to the announcement that this product is live.
My pace has potentially improved. It feels easier going the same pace anyway. All of my runs have been at the “feel good” pace, not pushing it at all. I am looking forward to next month when I am running a 10k and I can push it a little and see how that feels.
This week, I also started training for my next half marathon. Yep, I’m that crazy. I haven’t officially registered, but I am now training for the Smuttynose Brewing Company Half Marathon Rockfest.
Anyway, just had to brag a little bit. 50 days seems like a big milestone. I have no real goals for the next big number, just going to keep doing what I am doing for as long as I can do it!
Cue Ironman (Black Sabbeth, not the movie)
I’m not the only one that sings Ironman when I think of IAMLUG, right? Right? Anyone?
Anywhoo, I am going to IAMLUG in August. Details HERE.
I am really looking forward to it, lots of great sessions, lots of great speakers, and it’s FREE!
If you’re going, don’t forget your running shoes! I heard there are some beautiful routes to run along the river.
These aren't the droids you're looking for.
The Thirteenth Tale: A Novel by Diane Setterfield
The Thirteenth Tale is a story within a story type of book. Vida Winter is a famous author who is old and unwell. After telling multiple (incorrect) tales of her life to journalists, she is now ready to tell the truth. She wants to tell her story to Margaret Lea, herself a young and bookish girl who works in her father's antique bookshop and a biographer.
The book weaves in between the stories of current day Margaret and childhood Vida. Even the "present day" of Margaret has a timeless feel.
Aside from the story pulling me in and captivating me from the first chapter, the writing of this book is excellent. I found myself re-reading passages just because they sounded so beautiful. I generally tend to be a quick reader, I am engrossed in the story and rush to see what happens. Not so with The Thirteenth Tale, I sat back and read this book from cover to cover. One reviewer said this was a book for book-lovers and I completely agree!
However, I am ready to throw my computer out the window.
My day-to-day work is done in Domino Designer 8.0.2. I have a laptop and a test workstation with 8.5 installed so I can get used to the new Domino Designer, but I have greatly resisted working in 8.5. Why? you may ask. Or maybe you've worked in 8.5 and you already know why. Many tell me I have only to wait and 8.5.1 will answer my prayers. Call me a pessimist, but I have my doubts.
I haven't even worked in 8.5 long enough to have serious concerns, but it is the little things in life, right? The devil is in the details and all that.
1) WHY does it take four and half years for help to open?
2) Let's back up...WHY does it take four and a half years for Domino Designer to open? (I know what you'll tell me, but I don't care if it's a legitimate reason, it's still ANNOYING)
3) Now this one is nitpicky I admit, but still it's the little things, right? When I search for something in Help, I have to hit the freaking GO button, I can't just type a phrase and hit ENTER on my keyboard. Like I used to be able to do.
4) Focus issues. I will be editing something in Designer, like a field property and get an email and focus is lost.
5) More focus issues. I minimize Designer while I wait four hours for it to open and use another application, when it's done it pops back up into focus. Why? Other apps don't do this. If I minimized the app, I want it minimized, until *I* open it back up.
I apologize for being a bit curmudgeon-y and yes there is (supposedly) all this great new functionality in there that should make it all worth while. Still venting a bit helps. You can go ahead and tell me that I will drop to my knees in gratitude over 8.5.1. And pardon me, if I don't believe you.
