I'm Kathy Brown and I've been an application developer in Lotus Notes/Domino since 2005.

Prior to working in IT, I've had numerous careers including an Investment Analyst and even an Actress (long ago and far away).

And I (try to) love running!

Proxy Toggles for IE and Firefox

Category Web Browsers Proxies
I use the same laptop at home and in the office. In the office, I am required to use a proxy to access the internet. At home, I don't require a proxy. Going back and forth between the two on both IE and Firefox was driving me sort of crazy. There really is no easy one-click way to turn the proxy settings on or off.

So, I found two tools (yes, one for each browser) that do just that.

For firefox, I recommend the free add-on Toggle Proxy 1.1 and unfortunately not free, but worth it because it actually works, Proxy Toolbar for MSIE v 1.4.

Both of these add-ons add a simple button or toggle to the browser. Once you have set up your proxy information, it is then only a single click to turn on or turn off the proxy.

Calling All Nerd Girls

Category Nerd Girls Developer2010 Admin2010
I will be speaking at The View's Developer2010 conference in a couple of weeks. At the conference (co-located with Admin2010), we will be having a Nerd Girls Birds-of-a-Feather on Thursday from 12-12:45. Similar sessions and BOFs were at Lotusphere this year, and last year. At this year's Lotusphere we had buttons that were very popular (we actually ran out of them!) and will have them here as well. The buttons are sponsored by Simplified Technology Solutions.

In addition to lively discussion and networking, we will have laptops available so Nerd Girls can join our LinkedIn group and Nerd Girls skype chat.

The Nerd Girl discussions are always interesting and informative, so we hope you will join us!

And yes! Men are welcome to attend the session.

Nike Women's Marathon

Category Running Marathon
As many of you know, I started running in 2007. I've done a few half marathons, some 10ks and several 5ks. I'm on this crazy running-every-day kick, and coming up on one year of that. The marathon is something that "would be nice". Since I started running, I thought ONE would be nice. Just to say I've done it. (Please note: I said the same thing about 5k, 10k and half marathons). Last year around this time, I started looking around just to see what marathon I might be interested in.

My dream marathon was the Nike Women's Marathon. I'm not alone, so many people want to do this marathon, that they have had to resort to a lottery system to select runners.

Now, I had no plans for a marathon this year. Or even next year. I told myself, maybe before I turn 40. However, I saw the lottery was open earlier this month and thought, "WTF?". Why not? I'll either get it or I won't. No big deal.

Holy crap, guess what? I got it. Just received my notification today. I am registered for the Nike Women's Marathon. October 17, 2010 in San Francisco, CA. So I am both completely excited and completely freaked out!

What's Your Favorite Tool?

Category Tools Development Domino
I've had some recent blog entries on using the tools, like DXL Magic or Noteman. Frequently as developers, we think, I'll just do it myself. We code things, that's our job, so we ignore the tools that may be available to us. Or maybe we think they're too expensive. Whatever the reason, I find myself realizing that some tools save me so much time that they are worth the cost. Whether that cost is actual money, or just a piece of my pride (What?! You didn't just code something yourself?!).

Sadly, sometimes I don't look at a tool because it does too much. I don't have the time to spend to figure it all out, or what it can do for me.

So, what are your favorite tools as a Domino developer? Why is it your favorite tool? What do you use it for?

SNAPPS Quickr Bootcamp

Category Quickr Development
This week I attended the SNAPPS Quickr Bootcamp, held in Overland Park, KS. It was a three-day Quickr developer training session. The next time the SNAPPS folks offer this, RUN, don't walk, to sign up.

Obviously, these guys are smart, they're frequent speakers at conferences, and they are experts on Quickr. They have done a terrific job at putting together material to get you up to speed and developing with Quickr. The three day bootcamp covered what you need to know, as well as what to watch out for. They discussed how to fix things when they go wrong and what you should NOT do (but how to do it anyway). They've really condensed their years (and years and years) of experience and delivered a lot of that knowledge in three days.

The bootcamp was very well constructed, with a basic starting level and working up to more advanced topics. The format was part lecture, part hands on exercises, with enough of each to deliver the knowledge and keep the attendees engaged.

Much like going to Lotusphere, I feel exhausted and my head is filled with stuff I can't wait to get home and try out. Thanks SNAPPS guys!

Paper Coding

Category Development
The April issue of the Lotus User Group Developer Tips Newsletter is out. In it, I discuss paper coding, a twist on paper prototyping and psuedo-code. I'm curious if anyone else does anything like this when they code and what you think about it.

I'd also like to take a second to say if there is anything you'd like to know more about, or would like to see Tom and I write about in the Newsletter, feel free to drop us a line and let us know!
